The decision to republish Ninjak? Really? SO much great stuff is out there - and SO much better. And SO much more expensive than Ninjak. I would guess that outside of the last issue, you could find a run of Ninjak complete - for the same cost of this book. So ADD something, right?
Uhh...
Big mis-step here. Needed desperately SOME kind of add-on. Story, alternate art - even a letter from someone. Perhaps the unfinished story? SOMETHING... Moretti's intro was fair - but with the reins passing SO many times from one person to another, there wasn't entirely ANY Ninjak guy. Okay to include the original art, but desperately needed something extra to punch this up some. At least it included the zero and double zero issues, but could have also benefit from the Bloodshot stuff, too.
It took this long
This, I believe, was the first issue of Kickers, Inc. that wasn't absolute torture to read through. It wasn't great, but it really felt like an exploration of a character, and the actions of these characters finally had some real life consequences. Just that is a big move in the right direction. It explores the contest between Jack Magniconte, our hero, and a sort of severe anti-hero going to battle over a tennis match. It's a tried story, and strongly emulative of the old challenge with Billie Jean King, but it does raise some real issues with possible consequences, and Jack really struggles with his own attempts to win - and when he does finally believe that he may have beaten her, he first believes he has won, and then reality crashes slowly over him again. Nice work. Finally.
